Rebel Moon on the Las Vegas Sphere

How do you introduce a new sci-fi universe to the world in a way that matches the epic scale of the film that birthed it?

To help launch Netflix’s Rebel Moon, I led a team in building an international 3D DOOH campaign, bringing Zack Snyder’s epic universe to larger-than-life screens around the world – and culminating on the biggest canvas of them all: the Sphere in Las Vegas.

What we did

By leveraging the Sphere’s unique form factor, we created a monumental piece of real-world storytelling that translated the film’s epic scale into a tangible, must-see event.

We turned the Sphere into the planet Mara – a red, Jupiter-like gas giant – with a synchronised drone performance (the first in the Sphere’s history!) to create the planet’s radiant rings, before transforming it into a portal to one of Mara’s moons for a slice of character-driven narrative featuring the android Jimmy on a grand scale.

I saw this campaign from pitch through to delivery at the head of a multidisciplinary team of designers, creative technologists, and visual effects specialists. The campaign succeeded in driving audience engagement, both on location and via UGC, and became a huge PR moment for the release.

How we did it

To do this concept justice, we had to find a way to make the Sphere’s unique form an asset rather than an inconvenience.

For this reason, we spent a significant amount of time in research and previsulation to find the best solutions to the creative and technical challenges the Sphere presented – as well as optimising for both local spectators and UGC – before moving into production.

The synchronised drone show, which was essential in bringing the moment off the screen and into the real world, took meticulous planning too. I oversaw a close collaboration between the 3D animation team and the drone technicians to ensure a seamless handoff between the on-screen VFX and the physical flight paths.
